Why We Make Our Skincare in Korea

Dear Community, a founder’s note on why we formulate in Korea for dark skin tones

Q: Why do you formulate in Korea if your brand is for dark skin tones?

A: We don’t view it as “for” one place or one people. Our research, development, and testing take place where we can access the best science, facilities, and diverse expertise. Korea is home to several world-class cosmetic labs and pigment science teams that push innovation in safety, efficacy, and texture. That said, every formulation decision starts with you; women of color in mind- and we test on darker skin tones at every stage.

Q: Do you test on darker skin tones? How do you ensure suitability for deeper melanin-rich skin?

A: Yes. We engage testers who represent a wide range of skin tones within the Fitzpatrick V-VI range. We conduct patch tests, real-world wear tests, to ensure compatibility, coverage, and non-ghosting finishes.

Q: Why not test only in our home country?

A: VOUEE is always looking for new testing ground. We have quite high expectations for the companies we engage for testing and are open to new locales as long as they can ensure our standards are met. Our global testing approach lets us capture diverse conditions and ensure stability, efficacy, and safety across climates. We then tailor recommendations and documentation to our primary audience, women of color, so you know exactly how to use each product in your day-to-day routine.

Q: Are there ethical concerns about manufacturing abroad?

A: We rigorously vet partner labs for ethical sourcing, labor practices, environmental stewardship, and quality control. Transparency is non-negotiable. We review our supply chain commitments, certifications.

Q: How does this benefit customers with dark skin tones?

A: It means safer formulations, better textures, and more reliable results. It also means we’re not siloed into a single regional practice; we learn from global advances and bring those insights back to products designed for darker complexions. Our goals are consistent: protect, nourish, and celebrate melanin-rich skin without compromise.

Q: What can customers expect in terms of ongoing updates?

A: Regular transparency updates about ingredient choices, testing protocols, and any reformulations. We’ll share plain-language explanations of science behind decisions and practical tips for usage. When we improve a formula, we’ll guide you through what changed and why it matters for you.

Q: How can customers participate in this process?

A: We invite you to join our feedback loop. Share your experiences, complete quick surveys after trying a product, and participate in beta testing for new launches. Your input shapes our roadmap and helps us serve you better.

Thank you for being part of this journey. It’s our responsibility, and privilege, to formulate with intention, test with rigor, and craft skincare that honors the beauty and resilience of darker skin tones.

With gratitude,
Nina
